Apple quietly buys a sensor company that reads brain and muscle signals

Apple has acquired Sonera, a maker of non-invasive magnetic sensors that read brain and muscle signals, according to AppleInsider, which reported the news on September 8. No terms were announced. One report says the deal closed back in May, so the date is worth checking before anyone cites it.

Apple has not said what Sonera becomes. Sensors that read muscle and brain signals point past heart rate and sleep, toward what a wearable measures next. Quiet acquisitions tend to precede products that a company does not want previewed.

The timing adds a layer. The news landed in the same season as a new watch built around a health-sensing system, which makes the acquisition read like a second act. [Likely]
