eBay Cuts 1,000 Jobs for the Second Time This Year, and Still Won't Say Why

eBay is cutting roughly 9% of its global workforce, affecting more than 1,000 employees across every region where it operates. It's the company's second layoff round this year, following the roughly 800 roles it eliminated in February. A spokesperson confirmed the cuts this week, offering a now-familiar justification: the move aligns "our teams and resources with our top strategic priorities."

What makes the timing notable is that eBay's business isn't visibly struggling. The company's most recent quarter showed revenue up 15% to $3.1 billion, and it reports Q3 results next week. That combination, solid top-line growth paired with repeated workforce reductions, has become something of a pattern across e-commerce and tech this year, where "resetting priorities" increasingly means cutting headcount even when the numbers look fine.

eBay hasn't detailed which teams or functions are affected, and the company's public language has stayed deliberately vague about where the cuts land. For a marketplace built on the idea that everything has a buyer, eBay's own employees are finding out the hard way that headcount isn't exempt from the clearance rack.
