Etihad Casts Five Real People Instead of Actors — and Calls It a Brand Platform
Etihad Airways launches 'Beyond Borders', a global integrated campaign built on five documented lives rather than scripted ones, backed by heavy paid media.

Airlines usually sell the seat. Etihad Airways has decided to sell the reason someone got in it.
The Abu Dhabi carrier launched **Beyond Borders** on Tuesday, a global integrated campaign running across owned and earned channels with what the airline describes as a large investment in paid media. It is positioned less as a seasonal burst than as a platform — an idea the brand intends to keep using.
The casting is the strategy. The five people at the centre of the work are not actors. Etihad says they were selected after two and a half months of global research and interviews: Suaad Al Suwaidi, described as the first female Arab wildlife photographer, who left architecture to document the wild; Arivu Ravikkumar, executive chef at Abu Dhabi's Erth, who moved from Chennai and earned his first Michelin star; Nosarieme Garrick, the Emmy-nominated Nigerian filmmaker working between Lagos and New York; and freediving world champion Florian Dagoury, among others.
"Beyond Borders is built around a simple idea: some of the most powerful journeys begin with the ambition to go somewhere you haven't been before," said Arik De, Etihad's chief revenue and commercial officer. "We wanted to tell that story through real people whose lives have genuinely crossed borders."
The commercial logic sits underneath the sentiment. Etihad has spent the past three years rebuilding route capacity and leaning on sponsorship to buy attention in markets where it is not the default flag carrier. A platform that can absorb sports talent alongside documentary-style human stories is a container for that spend, not a one-off film.
The risk is familiar to anyone who has watched premium travel advertising: ambition is the single most crowded territory in the category. Etihad's defence is specificity. Named people with verifiable biographies are harder to confuse with a competitor's mood reel than a slow-motion shot of a window seat at sunrise.
