A Kimono Textile Artist Just Closed Out LA Fashion Week With Her Biggest Show Yet
Hiromi Asai spent a decade translating traditional Japanese fabric into modern menswear. Los Angeles just got the loudest version of it.

Menswear designer Hiromi Asai brought an expanded, 20-look version of her Spring/Summer 2027 collection, "Akatsuki — Before the Dawn," to Los Angeles Fashion Week on October 9, staged at The Majestic Downtown as part of the Art Hearts Fashion lineup. The collection takes its name from the pre-dawn hour when night is ending but day has not yet arrived, built around original Japanese textiles Asai has developed with kimono artisans since 2017.
The Los Angeles show mixed new designs shown for the first time with pieces previously staged in New York and Paris, plus archive looks never shown on the West Coast. Asai described the LA version as "bigger and a little more dramatic" to match the city's red-carpet instincts, leaning harder into statement silhouettes and eveningwear.
Asai's career case has always been that traditional craft and modern tailoring are not opposites, just two vocabularies nobody had bothered to translate between. Ten years and three fashion capitals later, that translation keeps getting a bigger stage every season.
