The Laughing Cow Stops Laughing for the First Time in Over 100 Years, and Won't Say Why
Bel Brands swapped its mascot's signature grin for a straight face on packaging nationwide, then refused to explain the joke.

The Laughing Cow has built its entire identity around a single expression, and on September 22, Bel Brands USA switched it off. Select packs of The Laughing Cow Creamy Original wedges now show the mascot with a flat, serious stare instead of her trademark laugh, a swap the company says is the first change to her expression in more than a century, rolled out to stores nationwide alongside matching imagery on Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook.

The brand is not explaining itself, which is the entire strategy. Shoppers are pointed to TheNotLaughingCow.com, where the story unfolds in pieces rather than all at once, and Jamee Pearlstein, chief marketing officer of Bel Brands US Cheese, is leaning into the ambiguity rather than resolving it: "The Laughing Cow has spent more than 100 years reminding us not to take life too seriously. So when she suddenly gets serious, you pay attention." It is a bet that a mascot's entire job, grinning reliably off a cheese wedge for generations, makes the one moment she stops the most interesting thing she has ever done.
Bel Group, the 160-year-old family-owned company behind the stunt, also owns Babybel, GoGo squeeZ, and Boursin across more than 30 brands sold in 120-plus countries, which means a straight-faced cow is a small swing for a company that size. Whether the reveal lands depends entirely on what is actually behind the mystery; a campaign built on a question only works if the answer is worth the wait.
