McDonald's Puts $8.5 Billion Behind a Bet That Hospitality Beats a Value Menu

McDonald's does not usually answer a sales slump with a bigger number than the problem. On September 23, the company unveiled an $8.5 billion investment plan through 2036, with roughly $5 billion committed by 2030, aimed at food quality, hospitality, value, and innovation under its "NEXT" strategy. The pitch to franchisees is concrete: an estimated $100,000 in additional annual cash flow per average US restaurant and a four-year payback period on the investment required to get there.

The backdrop explains the size of the number. McDonald's has posted several quarters of slowing sales growth, squeezed by inflation and a value war with rivals that shows no sign of ending, and recently missed second-quarter US sales estimates. The company also brought in industry veteran Skye Anderson as president of its US operations specifically to lead the turnaround, which makes this plan look less like an initiative and more like a mandate with a budget attached.

The math McDonald's wants investors to believe: a 250-basis-point efficiency gain, unit expansion contributing 2.5% to systemwide sales growth in 2027, and operating margins climbing into the 50-55% range by 2030, up from 46.9% in fiscal 2025. That is a big bet that better hospitality and food quality, not another discount menu, is what actually rebuilds a brand's pricing power. Whether customers agree is the only number on that list that is not McDonald's to control.
