Meta Promotes Its Own Crisis Communicator to Run Crisis Communications

Meta is elevating Tucker Bounds, a company veteran who first worked at Facebook from 2011 to 2014 before returning in 2017, to head of communications and public affairs, putting him in charge of shaping the company's public line on AI and platform safety at a moment when both are under a microscope. Bounds previously led communications across Meta's products, apps, executive messaging, and social channels, so the promotion is less a new hire than a battlefield reassignment.

He replaces David Ginsberg, who joined Meta in 2017 to run research and is shifting to a new role as VP of Product and Insights Innovation, working alongside the company's chief data officer on how AI reshapes user research and product development. Ginsberg's memo described the move as "the long-term succession plan for a number of years," with the timing now right for Bounds "to take the helm."

The handoff lands amid a genuinely crowded plate: an August settlement of up to $16.7 billion with states over claims that Meta's apps harm children and teens, ongoing fights over open-source AI regulation, and the rollout of Meta's personal AI assistant, Muse. Bounds credited Ginsberg with steering the communications team through "many of the most difficult issues" the company has faced, which is one way to describe inheriting all of them at once.
