News24 Has to Introduce a Channel Australians Already Watched
The first campaign since the Sky News Australia rebrand, via Today The Brave and Roller, faces the hardest job in branding: renaming something familiar.
Renaming a news channel is not a design exercise. It is an argument with habit. News24 started making that argument on Monday.
The channel released its first campaign since the Sky News Australia rebrand, created with Today The Brave and Roller — the first sustained public work to carry the new name into a market that spent years reaching for the old one.
The mechanics of a rename are brutal in news. Viewers do not choose a channel, they default to one, and the default is stored in muscle memory: a logo bug in the corner, a number on a remote, a phrase people say out loud. Every one of those has to be rewritten.
What helps News24 is that the product did not change. The people, the schedule and the tone are continuous, so the campaign's only real task is transferring credit from the old name to the new one — not building trust from zero.
The trap is over-explaining. Rebrand campaigns that dwell on the change keep the old name alive; the ones that work simply behave as though the new name has always been the name.
