Rapha's CEO Quits Right Before the Layoffs Start

Rapha CEO Fran Millar has resigned after two years running the cycling apparel brand, and she is not pretending the timing is a coincidence. "The business will make significant organisational changes to reduce cost and drive efficiency, and those changes call for a different governance and leadership structure," she said in her resignation statement. In other words: the cuts are coming, and someone else is going to be the one standing in front of the company when they land.

Millar's own framing was upbeat: "After two bonkers and brilliant years, I've decided to leave Rapha. The vision and strategy I set are in place, and the path ahead for the brand is clear. What remains is delivery." That is a tidy way to describe leaving before the hardest part of the job, restructuring a business that has posted a net loss for eight consecutive years. The most recent results, for the period ending January 2025, showed £96.2 million in revenue against a £15.6 million net loss, with CFO Michelle Woolaghan attributing much of the shortfall to amortization tied to the 2017 acquisition by Steuart and Tom Walton, grandsons of the Walmart founder.

Millar arrived at Rapha with a turnaround record, having taken Belstaff from a £20 million annual loss to breakeven. At Rapha she ended the brand's EF Pro Cycling sponsorship and struck a new partnership with USA Cycling instead, the kind of move that reads as strategy on the way in and as unfinished business on the way out. Rapha has not named a successor, which means the next CEO inherits a five-year plan that is not theirs, a cost-cutting mandate that is, and a fan base that already knows exactly whose vision they are executing.
