Rebel Bets a Two-Story Hobart Flagship on Tasmania's First AFL Team

Super Retail Group's sporting goods chain opened its largest Tasmanian store in the old H&M spot, wagering that a state about to get its first AFL franchise wants somewhere bigger to buy the gear.

Rebel Bets a Two-Story Hobart Flagship on Tasmania's First AFL Team

Rebel just bet that Tasmania is about to care a lot more about sport, and put a two-level store on Hobart's main strip to prove it believes its own bet.

The Super Retail Group-owned chain opened a 3,000-square-metre flagship on Murray Street, in the space a departing H&M left behind, creating more than 40 local jobs. It is the chain's second store in the state built around Rebel's "Customer Experience" format, which trades shelf space for interactive zones, including a football area where shoppers can test boots and gear before buying. The timing is not subtle: Tasmania is set to field its first Australian Football League team, and the store leans hard into Tasmanian Devils merchandise ahead of it. "We know how passionate Tasmanians are about sport, and with the state's first AFL team on the horizon, there's never been a more exciting time to open a store of this scale in Hobart," the company said.

Managing director Jenny Child is running an expansion plan that would take Rebel from 39 regional stores to 70 by June 2031, mixing formats between full experiential flagships and smaller compact locations. The CBD flagship version is the expensive one: taking over two floors of prime footprint means higher staffing ratios and rent that only pencils out with strong conversion, a bet that only works if the interactive-store thesis actually outperforms scrolling the same gear online.

Betting a flagship's economics on a sports franchise that has not played a game yet is either shrewd timing or getting ahead of a market that has not shown up. Rebel will find out which one it picked well before its next 30 stores open.
