Torrid's CFO Exits Just as the Turnaround Was Supposed to Prove Itself

Torrid is changing its finance chief at a moment when plus-size specialty retail is under more pressure, not less. CFO Paula Dempsey is departing to pursue a new opportunity after just under four years in the role, and will stay through mid-November to manage the handoff. Her interim replacement, Will Langley, spent roughly two decades at Belk before leaving in 2025, which gives Torrid a steady, big-retail hand in the seat rather than a blank slate.

CEO Lisa Harper's welcome leaned specifically on that Belk pedigree, citing Langley's experience as the reason he's the right interim fit. That's a notable choice of credential: Belk is itself mid-refinancing and mid-turnaround, so Torrid is essentially borrowing credibility from a chain that's still proving its own comeback, betting that the skills required to steer one department store through turbulence transfer cleanly to a mall-based apparel brand built on an entirely different customer.

CFO transitions rarely make headlines on their own, but the timing here is the story: specialty apparel retailers have spent the back half of 2026 getting squeezed on traffic and margin, and a finance seat going interim right as the holiday quarter approaches is the kind of detail investors will clock even if the official line, departure for a new opportunity, gives them nothing to hang a worry on.
