Uniqlo's Return to San Francisco Comes With a Seven-Hour Block Party

Uniqlo is reopening at 801 Market Street in downtown San Francisco, moving into a space Old Navy vacated back in 2023. The retailer is marking the return with a seven-hour block party featuring DJs, art displays, and local programming.

The opening matters more than one store reopening usually would. Uniqlo left its old Powell Street location during the pandemic, a departure widely read as a sign of downtown's decline, and brokers are framing its return as the kind of anchor that pulls other retailers back with it. Los Angeles Apparel confirmed last week it's moving into that old Powell Street space, and Tumi and Aritzia are reportedly circling downtown locations of their own, while a Zara flagship at 400 Post is targeting an opening early next year.

The data backs up the optimism, cautiously: a citywide survey found nearly 60% of respondents reported going downtown to shop, up from about 44% in 2023. The vacancies on Market Street haven't disappeared, and the empty San Francisco Centre mall is still a problem nobody's solved, but for one afternoon at least, a block party for a clothing store is standing in for the closest thing downtown San Francisco has had to a comeback tour.
