Walmart Will Cover Your Prescriptions for Free, Starting Next Year
More than 250 medications, a new rare-conditions specialist program, and up to 12 weeks of paid NICU leave are all coming to Walmart's U.S. employee health plan on January 1.

Starting January 1, 2027, Walmart will cover more than 250 medications at no cost for its U.S. employees, the retailer announced this week as part of a broader benefits expansion. The company is also adding a Rare Conditions specialist program to help employees navigate complex diagnoses, along with a new paid NICU leave benefit of up to 12 weeks for parents of newborns requiring intensive care.
The moves land as Walmart, the country's largest private employer, continues to lean into healthcare as both an employee benefit and a business line. Free prescriptions and paid NICU leave are not the kind of thing that shows up in a Super Bowl ad, but for Walmart's roughly 1.6 million U.S. workers, they might matter more than one.
