Zara Hands John Galliano the Keys to Its Own Archive
The fast-fashion giant launched "Vol. 1" on October 1, its first collection with the couturier who built his name at Dior and Margiela, timed to upstage Paris Fashion Week from the outside.

Zara just told the world's most-watched fashion week it is not the only show in town. On October 1, at 10 a.m. Central European Summer Time, Zara released "Vol. 1," its first collection designed by John Galliano, the couturier behind two decades of headline-making work at Dior and Maison Margiela. The brand describes the line as "created by the couturier John Galliano," "built from our memory," and "made for the present," pulling from Zara's own archive rather than Galliano's back catalog.
The partnership runs at least two years, and Inditex non-executive chair Marta Ortega Pérez has been open about the pull: Galliano is the designer she has "always admired the most." True to form, Zara released almost no details ahead of launch, no pricing, no full look book, leaning on scarcity and Galliano's name to do the marketing a mass retailer usually cannot buy.
It is a savvier move than it looks. Fashion month runs on exclusivity and access; Zara runs on volume and speed. Pairing a couture legend with a retailer that can put product on shelves within days does not just borrow Galliano's prestige, it turns it into something the runway crowd cannot offer: a collection you can actually buy the same morning you hear about it.
