Airbnb Guests No Longer Have to Clean the Whole House Before They Leave

Starting November 20, hosts can't require guests to wash dishes, strip beds, or haul out the trash, and Airbnb says repeat offenders could see their listings penalized.

Airbnb Guests No Longer Have to Clean the Whole House Before They Leave

Airbnb told hosts this week that, starting November 20, they will "generally not" be allowed to require guests to do checkout chores like washing dishes, stripping beds, or taking out the garbage. It's the company's first published policy spelling out exactly which house-rule requests count as reasonable, after 18 years of guests quietly resenting the chore lists left behind on nightstands.

The new "Reasonable House Rules and Requests" policy also bars hosts from charging separately for anything already included in the listing, imposing their own damage fines on top of AirCover, or requiring a separate rental agreement outside a short list of exceptions like monthly stays or Airbnb Luxe. Guests can still be asked to do the basics, like putting dishes in the sink or sorting recycling, just not the deep-clean routine that made some checkouts feel like a part-time job. Airbnb's host resource center puts it plainly: "Asking them to do things a cleaner should handle can negatively affect their stay and your reviews."

Enforcement has teeth. Hosts who keep violating the policy risk a notice on their listing, lower search visibility, or, per Airbnb, "other actions under our terms of service" that could mean losing Superhost status or getting suspended entirely. The reaction from hosts has been predictably mixed: about a dozen pushed back in Airbnb's community forum within a day of the announcement, two French hosts reportedly threatened to leave the platform, and at least one Quebec City property manager shrugged it off as the cost of doing business on someone else's platform.
