Amazon Teaches Alexa 100 New Ways to Spend Your Money

Amazon just gave its Alexa for Shopping assistant more than 100 new capabilities, letting it build and edit gift lists and registries, manage Subscribe & Save deliveries, check Prime membership perks and renewal dates, update delivery instructions, and chase down refunds and gift card balances, all without opening a single app menu. The company says more than 400 million customers used Alexa for Shopping in the past year, and use of its more autonomous "agentic" features has grown eightfold since January.

The timing is the real story. Amazon originally built this conversational layer on a tool called Rufus, then quietly renamed the whole experience "Alexa for Shopping" back in May, a decision Gartner analyst Brad Jashinsky chalked up to brand recognition: "Alexa has much higher brand awareness than Rufus." Nobody remembers Rufus. Everybody already has an Alexa in their kitchen. Six months later, the feature list has caught up to the name change, just in time for the holidays, when Amazon most wants customers talking to a device instead of comparison-shopping in a browser tab.

Vice president Rajiv Mehta framed it as convenience: "Our vision for Alexa for Shopping is to make every part of shopping as convenient as possible." Convenient for the customer, sure. It is also a hundred new reasons to never leave Amazon's ecosystem to check a price, track a package, or dispute a bill.
