AstraZeneca Sent an AI Llama Into the Asthma Aisle

Pharmaceutical advertising is not where you expect to find the frontier of AI creative. This week it was.

AstraZeneca launched a campaign for its Breztri inhaler that targets asthma patients for the first time, after years of marketing the product exclusively to people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The creative, developed by Edelman, is built around an AI-generated llama.

The mascot choice is doing category work. Inhaler advertising is a wall of clinical sameness, and a synthetic animal gives AstraZeneca a distinctive asset it can own across a label expansion rather than a stock-photography lung. It also signals to a younger asthma patient population that the brand speaks their visual language.

The risk is equally clear. Regulated categories carry the least tolerance for creative that looks unreal, and audiences increasingly read AI imagery as a shortcut. In health, "we cut corners" is an unhelpful brand association to invite.

That is the trade every marketer is now weighing in public: a mascot that would once have cost months of production is available in days, provided the brand can absorb what synthetic craft says about it.
