Duolingo Stopped Making English the Starting Line
A new Learn English from Punjabi course, launched with Talented, treats a first language as an asset rather than an obstacle.
Most language products quietly assume you already speak English. Duolingo just removed that assumption for more than a hundred million people.
The company launched its Learn English from Punjabi course with agency Talented, opening the platform to Punjabi speakers in India and across the diaspora who previously had to route their learning through a language they did not have.
Strategically this is distribution dressed as inclusion — and that is a compliment. Every new source language multiplies the addressable market without a new product category, and the brands that win in India win by respecting language rather than flattening it.
It also sharpens the Duolingo brand beyond the owl and the streak. The mascot marketing gets the attention; the courses are the proof that the mission is not a bit.
The measure of success will not be downloads. It is whether learners who start in Punjabi finish at the same rate as those who start in English.
