Campbell Global Becomes J.P. Morgan Natural Capital
Five years after the acquisition, the timberland manager drops its founder name — and signals that "sustainable forestry" has become a much bigger category.

A name change at an asset manager is usually housekeeping. This one is a category bet. J.P. Morgan Asset Management announced that Campbell Global, the Portland-based investment manager specialising in forestland and nature-based assets, will operate as J.P. Morgan Natural Capital.
J.P. Morgan acquired Campbell Global five years ago, adding a pioneer of sustainable timberland investing to its alternatives platform. Since then the business has grown in size, scale and client reach — and, more importantly for the brand, widened its mandate beyond trees.
"This is more than a new name," said Angie Davis, CEO of J.P. Morgan Natural Capital. "It reflects who we are today and the direction we believe the asset class is moving. Our roots in sustainable forestry remain central to who we are, but our mandate has expanded to the broader role nature plays."
The vocabulary is the story. Timberland is an asset. Natural capital is a framework — land, carbon, biodiversity and other nature-related investments held together as one thesis. Adopting the term inside the world's most recognisable financial brand moves it from conference language to product language.
There is a cost to the swap: Campbell Global carried three decades of specialist credibility with institutional allocators, and founder names are hard currency in asset management. Trading it for the parent mark is a wager that the growth now comes from clients who buy the category rather than the pedigree.
