Outcast Turned a Bodega Into a Bit, and Festivalgoers Walked Right Into the Joke
The Australian fashion brand built a "corner store for party girls" inside Portola Music Festival's VIP section, complete with chrome baskets, a hidden camera, and a hoodie that sold out at the merch tent.

Outcast opened its second festival activation in three months on Sept. 26 and 27, building a full-scale bodega parody called The Inconvenience Store inside the VIP area of Portola Music Festival at Pier 80 in San Francisco. The brand, an Australian clothing label that has spent the past year expanding aggressively into the US and UK, partnered with festival promoter Goldenvoice and tapped Fluff Studios to build out the 20-by-20-foot set, following its Le Club Outcast activation at Splash House in August.
The joke was in the details. A corrugated chrome exterior and "Open Late 24/7" signage gave way to a bold red interior stocked with chrome shopping baskets, red milk crates, round mirrors, and a neon "Find Love in the Warehouse" sign. The merch leaned into the bit just as hard: chrome-wrapped condoms, pill boxes, lighter covers, matchbooks, buttons, and festival bingo cards, plus a limited-edition "Pier Pressured" hoodie sold separately at the festival's official merch tent. A hidden fisheye camera tucked inside a faux fridge recorded four-second clips guests could pull up on their phones, and a wall of rave flyers doubled as a photo backdrop that spit out a printed "receipt."
"We wanted to create something that felt connected to the city itself," said Christina McGonagle, Outcast's CMO. Her read on experiential marketing is the more interesting takeaway: "experiential marketing should contribute to the atmosphere rather than interrupt it." That is a harder brief than it sounds, since most festival activations exist to pull attention away from the festival, not sink into it. Two activations in three months suggests Outcast thinks the bit is working.
