Target hands its brand to Hilton's brand builder
MARK WEINSTEIN JOINS TARGET AS CHIEF MARKETING AND GUEST EXPERIENCE OFFICER, TAKING ON BRAND, LOYALTY, THE ROUNDEL RETAIL MEDIA NETWORK, AND TARGET PLUS IN ONE UNUSUALLY BROAD MANDATE.

Target named Mark Weinstein chief marketing and guest experience officer, effective immediately, in an announcement dated September 14 that industry press picked up through September 15. He reports directly to chief executive Michael Fiddelke and joins the executive leadership team.
The scope is the story. Weinstein takes brand, loyalty, guest experience, and digital, and he also inherits Roundel, the retailer's fast-growing retail media network, and Target Plus, its curated marketplace. Putting a media business and a brand business under one executive is a statement about where Target thinks growth comes from, and about refusing to let the two drift apart.
He arrives from Hilton, where he was global chief marketing officer across 28 brands and head of luxury brands. There he built "Hilton. For the Stay." — a platform durable enough to survive several years of category noise — and turned Hilton Honors into one of the largest loyalty programs in travel. Before that he was a consultant at MarketBridge and PricewaterhouseCoopers.
"Mark has a proven ability to understand what consumers value and turn those insights into brand connections that feel relevant and personal," Fiddelke said, framing the hire as central to the company's growth strategy.
The subtext for a retailer working through a stretch of soft results: Target's problem has rarely been awareness, and a loyalty-and-personalization operator is a pointed answer to a brand that people know well but visit less.
