Workday Hires a Cloud Marketer to Sell AI to the CFO

Workday named Sarah Kennedy Ellis chief marketing officer on Thursday, effective October 5, with the role reporting directly to co-founder, chief executive, and chair Aneel Bhusri.

Kennedy Ellis arrives from Google, where she led global marketing for Google Cloud and Google Workspace. Before that she was CMO of Adobe Experience Cloud, and CMO of Marketo ahead of its 2018 acquisition by Adobe.

That is a very specific résumé: three tours marketing enterprise platforms into buying committees, at exactly the moment the category stopped selling software and started selling AI. Workday now describes itself as the enterprise AI platform for HR, finance, and IT, which is a positioning claim more than a product description, and positioning claims are what CMOs are hired to make legible.

The reporting line is the tell. A marketing chief sitting under the founder-CEO rather than a revenue officer means brand is being treated as a company-level asset, not a demand-generation function. Enterprise software is crowded with companies asserting the same AI narrative in the same vocabulary, and differentiation there is a brand problem before it is a feature problem.

The difficulty is credibility with the finance buyer. HR software earns its way in through the people function; expanding into finance and IT means persuading a CFO who has spent two years being pitched AI by everyone. Cloud marketing experience is the right preparation for that conversation, because hyperscaler buyers ask the same question: what does this actually do, and what does it cost to run.

Kennedy Ellis inherits a strong brand in one department and an argument to win in two others.
